This blog

Things will be slow here for a while, as we get set up, but check back for updates. We will be blogging our 2009 farm season. The Urban Farmer will also be a resource for gardening and urban farming, so look forward to lots of growing tips and other fun stuff in the months ahead. We also like to pretend we're down with new media, so you can follow us on Twitter Happy gardening!

Urban farmers looking for land in Vancouver

You've heard of the 100 mile diet, how about the 0 mile diet?

Do you have space in your yard that you'd like to see turned into a bountiful and sustainable food producing garden?

We are two young organic farmers who can no longer afford to farm in the Fraser Valley. Instead of giving up the work we love, we've decided to become urban farmers!

The idea:

We are developing a network of yards that we will farm in the 2009 season. We grow organically, but will no longer be certified organic once we move our operations to the city. Basically, we do the work (dig out the grass, bring in soil and compost, grow the crops, weed and take care of them, harvest them weekly) and you enjoy having a beautiful, environmentally friendly, butterfly and bird-attracting garden with zero work. You also get delicious free veggies every week!

What we are looking for:

*Spaces that get at least 6 hours of sunlight every day, the more sun the better

*The larger the space the better, but we will consider any space available

*Access to water (we have our own hoses, but need an outdoor tap)

*Yards that are maintained without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides.

We are looking for spaces on the Eastside of Vancouver, but will consider any offer of space. Mount Pleasant, Cedar Cottage and Commercial Drive is our ideal, as we do all our commuting by bike (except for harvest day, when we use a van).
